Reggae Strong was the first reggae television series to be broadcast internationally between 1987-1992. The interview, concert & cultural footage uploaded here was produced by Step Lively Video between 1984 - 1994, a classic era in roots reggae music.
Conceived by Jamaican playwright/actor Stafford Ashani, as a "cultural video magazine", and produced & edited by Diane Gurwitz (later dubbed 'Strong'), out of New York City-an essential stop on every artist's itinerary-Reggae Strong documents a vital decade in reggae's international development The original News & Reviews sections & vintage ads from those first seasons, included here, offer a unique time capsule into reggae history.
I am also sharing this channel with Concrete Jungleheart Photo Art, where I will be creating music videos from original photo art shot in my hometown. I look forward to bringing you good vibes, good images and good music to strengthen our souls and keep our spirits up.

Lucky Dube—No Truth in The World—extended version
HAPPY 60th BIRTHDAY LUCKY!
Just know that wherever your spirit roams in space and time, you always have a dwelling place and a huge family to linger with right here on this channel.
"No Truth in the World" is a performance masterpiece. Certainly in this particular concert, you could not ask for more from a singer or from a band. This was to be the last song of the night, but even though they'd been playing and dancing non-stop for 90 minutes, the audience had to call Lucky and the band back for an encore.
Such a joyful night: July 8, 1990 at Bay Street, in Sag Harbor, NY, on Lucky's second tour of the U.S.

Just a one-camera capture of the legendary legendaries: Tommy McCook (saxophone), Roland Alphonso (saxophone), Lloyd Knibb, (drums) Lloyd Brevett (bass),, Nathan Breedlove (trumpet), Joshua Roseman (trombone), Devon James on guitar, aka. the Skatalites. Rare footage shot at SOB's in New York City, on December 19, 1990, just 3 days after the passing of fellow legend, Jackie Mittoo...which everyo...
Toots Hibbert-Hard Road, 1985

"Sooner or later, I'll be gone, and you're gonna say: if I had known...I would have danced." The sorely missed Toots Hibbert, showing his versatility way back in 1985 with some reggae blues at Club Negril, in New York City on March 10, 1985. I don't remember where we borrowed/rented these cameras from, but the shoot was a little rough and this is an early analog cut. I will remaster it when I g...
Judy Mowatt-Screwface

The concert shoot was beset by technical problems and I am amazed to see all these years later, that Judy's performance conquered all. We couldn't get the audio quality we wanted, but the sound is live enough to demonstrate what a dynamic performer Judy Mowatt has always been. And the song? Who can't relate to these lyrics now, even though they were written by a young Bob Marley way back in 197...
Lucky Dube-The Hand That Giveth, 2024 remaster

Okay, Lucky Dube fans, here is an extended version of "The Hand That Giveth", remastered for 2024. I think this may be Lucky's most beloved song, and the performance here, choreography-wise, muscianship-wise and just pure joy-wise, could not be better. Recorded in 1990 a month before Lucky's 26th birthday, it's evident we are watching an ascendant star. This show took place on Lucky's second to...
Reggae Strong-Interview with Toots, Pt 1

This interview (and concert) with the legendary Toots Hibbert (of Toots and the Maytals), was one of the first things we shot for Reggae Strong, in 1985. Although we usually conducted our interviews with the interviewer off-camera, this was one of the few instances where we had a guest interviewer, in this case, radio personalty, Ken Williams, at his historic venue, Club Negril, in downtown Man...
Lucky Dube-Reggae Strong & Peanut Butter

Reggae Strong was the first television show that Lucky Dube appeared on during his first tour of the U.S. in 1989. (Part of that first interview can be viewed here on this channel). To our surprise and pleasure, Lucky loved that experience so much he wrote this song and recorded it for his "Prisoner" album the next year. The song always made me smile, until 2007 when the lyrics, of course, stru...

From deep in the vault...one of our first shoots with Toots, performing "5446" at Club Negril; in New York City in March, 1985. This is an old rough cut, and neither the sound nor the video are up to snuff, but I'm sharing it anyway because it's just so great to get a glimpse of Toots performing this classic song nearly 40 years ago. Also a treat to see him pick up a guitar! Give thanks to Ken ...
Lucky Dube-Prisoner

Here is one of Lucky's biggest songs-"Prisoner", from his concert at Bay Street, on July 8, 1990. Also included is a musical segue..."One Love"...to the next song that features his three wonderful backup singers: Thandie Sikhutshwa, Ntombi Mtshali and Bhere Shandu. Special mention on "Prisoner" to Thandie, for her choreography (more like a pantomime) and her wonderful interplay with both Lucky ...
Reggae Strong-Third World '86 (abridged)

Third World was Reggae Strong's pilot program, the episode that got the series on the air. This particular program combines one of our earliest shoots from 1984 (the nyabinghi session at the end), with an interview and studio session shot at E.A.R.S. Studio in East Orange, New Jersey, in 1986. Because of copyright restrictions, I've had to remove the band's promo videos that were featured in th...

Reggae Strong shot an episode with Aswad, in 1990, in Kingston, Jamaica, while they were recording their "Too Wicked" album at Music Works Studio. In this video you will see a slightly abridged version of the original program, which includes the group's interview discussing their work, history and musical philosophy. (Unfortunately, RUclips restricts me from including Aswad's videos publicly. I...
Judy Mowatt-Black Woman

Judy Mowatt's classic hit, "Black Woman" performed at the Diamond Club, Toronto (and also in Montreal) in June, 1989. The band: back-up singers Annicia Banks and Sharon Jackson, Danny Miller on bass, Cornell Campbell on drums, Horace James on keyboards, Marlon Graves on guitar. I am not sure that Judy has ever gotten the recognition as a solo artist that she deserves!

"Satan is working, day and night Doing the best he can, to destroy what Jah created Trying by all means, to get us off the way..." Jah Save Us. I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets a lump in her throat hearing that in the final number of this magnificent concert, Lucky is asking for protection from gunmen entering his neighborhood. I do have a few more songs to remaster and upload from this c...
Lucky Dube-I've Got You Babe

This is part of the encore that Lucky did after performing for 80 minutes without a breather...one of his earliest hits, "I've Got You Babe." It was a hot day in July; hot outside and even hotter inside, at Bay Street, in Sag Harbor, NY. Great audience, great singer, great band. Those were the days, my friend. Give thanks to the Step Lively crew: cameramen Earl Solomon, Stafford Ashani and Lee,...
Judy Mowatt-Lively Up...Get Up...No Woman, No Cry

This great performance by Judy Mowatt took place in 1989 at the Diamond Club in Toronto, Canada. The show was produced by my friend, Buzrak Mabrak (RIP), and we encountered many technical challenges that had to be overcome, both sound-wise and power-wise. Because of those glitches, we decided to travel to Montreal later that night to shoot Judy's performance the next day, and I used some of tha...
